Commodities Buzz: US average daily Iron Ore production down 16% on month in Jan-25

According to a latest update from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the US mine production and shipments of iron ore in January 2025 were estimated to be 3.29 million metric tons (Mt) and 1.65 Mt, respectively. Average daily production of iron ore was 106,000 metric tons (t), a decrease of 16% from 127,000 t in December 2024 and a slight decrease from 108,000 t in January 2024. Average daily shipments of iron ore were 53,200 t, a decrease of 61% from 137,000 t in December 2024 and a decrease of 5% from 55,800 t in January 2024. Mine stocks were estimated to be 7.51 Mt at the end of January 2025, an increase of 28% from 5.87 Mt at the end of December 2024 and an increase of 13% from at the end of January 2024. The US exports of iron ore were 426,000 t in January 2025, a decrease of 60% from 1.05 Mt in December 2024 and a decrease of 22% from 545,000 t in January 2024 (fig. 2, tables 3, 6). Canada was the leading destination for exports, accounting for 82% of the total (table 3). U.S. imports of iron ore were 236,000 t in January 2025, a decrease of 6% from 252,000 t in December 2024 and a decrease of 24% from 310,000 t in January 2024.
