The key domestic indices closed marginally lower. Nifty Pharma, Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Healthcare Index shares gained, while Nifty Media and Nifty FMCG shares retreated.
As per provisional closing data, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, lost 460.30 points or 0.62% to 73,249.39. The Nifty 50 index edged lower by 123.70 points or 0.54% to 22,687.65. In the past three trading sessions, the Nifty and Sensex declined by 1.98% and 1.98%, respectively.
The broader market performed better than frontline indices. The BSE 150 MidCap Index posted modest losses of 0.79% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index declined 0.92%.
The market breadth was fragile. On the BSE, 1677 shares advanced and 3496 shares fell. A total of 235 shares were unchanged.
Eternal Ltd was the top traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 855.05 lakh shares and registered a sharp increase of 309.66% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock has plunged around 7.01% in last one-month and has fallen sharply 7.62% over last one year.
HDFC Bank Ltd was the second highest traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 602.81 lakh shares and posted a sharp rise of 100.47% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock has slumped by around 4.40% in last one-month and has slumped 29.85% over last one year.
In NSE500, Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Ltd witnessed a sharp intraday recovery of 20.09%.The stock tested low of Rs 31.65 and ended at Rs 38.01, higher by around 18.56% on the day.
Index action
The Nifty Pharma index advanced slightly by 0.12% to 25596.65 today. The index is marginally lower by 0.66% in last one week and has shed 5.39% over last one month. It has gained 13.55% in last one year. Aurobindo Pharma Ltd (up 2.03%), Piramal Pharma Ltd (up 1.99%), Zydus Lifesciences Ltd (up 1.58%), Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd (up 1.35%) and Cipla Ltd (up 1.29%) traded higher.
The Nifty Media index shed 2.35% to 1584.5 today. The index is slightly lower by 1.14% in last one week and has moved higher by 4.29% over last one month. It edged higher by 5.26% in last one year. Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (down 5.39%), Sun TV Network Ltd (down 4.28%), Tips Music Ltd (down 3.31%), Nazara Technologies Ltd (down 2.75%) and D B Corp Ltd (down 2.69%) fell.
The Nifty FMCG index moved lower by 1.41% to 43105.45 today. The index has dropped sharply by 3.43% in last one week and has slipped by 4.75% over last one month. It tumbled by 22.77% in last one year. Radico Khaitan Ltd (down 3.55%), Dabur India Ltd (down 2.92%), Nestle India Ltd (down 2.78%), Colgate-Palmolive (India) Ltd (down 2.03%) and Godfrey Phillips India Ltd (down 2.03%) moved lower.
