The key domestic indices finished slightly lower. Nifty Media, Nifty Chemicals and Nifty Auto shares gained, while Nifty FMCG and Nifty PSU Bank shares retreated.
As per provisional closing data, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, lost 547.65 points or 0.76% to 71,924.68. The Nifty 50 index moved lower by 157.10 points or 0.70% to 22,363.35. In the past three trading sessions, the Nifty and Sensex drifted lower by 1.06% and 0.98%, respectively.
The broader market performed better than frontline indices. The BSE 150 MidCap Index added 0.13% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index rose 1.08%.
The market breadth was negative. On the BSE, 2601 shares advanced and 2621 shares declined. A total of 278 shares were unchanged.
Tata Steel Ltd was the top traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 270.8 lakh shares and recorded a sharp increase of 35.05% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock has fallen sharply by around 7.92% in last one-month and has eased 1.49% over last one year.
HDFC Bank Ltd was the second highest traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 181.98 lakh shares and recorded a sharp decline of 45.77% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock has rallied 2.93% in last one-month and has lost significant ground 27.62% over last one year.
Index action
The Nifty Media index jumped 4.60% to 1624.8 today. The index is modestly lower by 0.46% in last one week and has risen slightly by 1.76% over last one month. It edged lower by 0.27% in last one year. Prime Focus Ltd (up 7.99%), Tips Music Ltd (up 7.21%), Nazara Technologies Ltd (up 7.16%), Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (up 5.73%) and PVR Inox Ltd (up 5.58%) moved higher.
The Nifty Chemicals index inched up by 1.24% to 28316.35 today. The index has eased by 0.06% in last one week and has shed 7.07% over last one month. It eased by 4.16% in last one year. Tata Chemicals Ltd (up 8%), UPL Ltd (up 5.40%), Aarti Industries Ltd (up 2.99%), Gujarat Fluorochemicals Ltd (up 2.85%) and Navin Fluorine International Ltd (up 2.50%) rose.
The Nifty FMCG index decreased by 1.67% to 44113.4 today. The index is marginally higher by 0.64% in last one week and has edged lower 0.98% over last one month. It has fallen sharply by 17.99% in last one year. Dabur India Ltd (down 3.18%), ITC Ltd (down 3.05%), Colgate-Palmolive (India) Ltd (down 2.79%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd (down 1.94%) and Varun Beverages Ltd (down 1.75%) retreated.
The Nifty PSU Bank index moved lower by 1.18% to 8030.65 today. The index has gained modestly by 1.39% in last one week and has slipped by 2.90% over last one month. It is up 7.36% in last one year. Indian Bank (down 1.89%), State Bank of India (down 1.89%), Indian Overseas Bank (down 1.08%), Canara Bank (down 1.01%) and Union Bank of India (down 1%) fell.
